Undir-Ponda Villagers Unite Against Proposed Sewage Treatment Plant

In a significant development, residents of Undir-Ponda village have taken a firm stand against the proposed 15 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and landfilling project in their area. Expressing their concerns over the potential environmental and infrastructural impacts of the project, the villagers gathered today to voice their opposition.

During the gathering, community members emphasized their concerns about the project’s potential consequences, particularly in the upcoming monsoon season. They fear that the construction of the sewage treatment plant and landfill could lead to flooding issues, putting their homes and livelihoods at risk. The locals cited the need to prioritize sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions that do not jeopardize their village’s safety.

To further vocalize their opposition and raise awareness about the issue, the villagers have organized a public meeting scheduled for September 3rd. During this meeting, they plan to discuss the various concerns associated with the proposed project and rally community support. In a strong show of determination, the villagers have also warned that they are prepared to take legal action by approaching the Supreme Court if necessary.

One of the key points of contention raised by the villagers is the discrepancy between the number of trees that would be affected by the project. According to the villagers, there are approximately 30,000 trees in the area that would be impacted by the project’s implementation. However, they pointed out that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has granted permission for the removal of only 109 trees. This discrepancy highlights the villagers’ concerns about the potential environmental impact of the project and the need for more comprehensive assessments.

In an effort to address the villagers’ concerns Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Nilesh Cabral visited the project site. During their visit, the officials engaged with the villagers and sought to understand their apprehensions. The villagers have urged the government to consider their input and take their concerns into account before proceeding with the project.
