Uproar over land filling at Sancoale

Local MLA, MPDA and sarpanch vow stringent action

VASCO: A land filling adjoining the industrial area in Sancoale has sent alarm bells of “natural calamities” among the locals and the elected members.
Local MLA Alina Saldanha, Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai and others have assured of action in the matter and make sure the land is restored to its original position.
After inspecting the site on Friday with Saldanha, MPDA member Atchut Naik said that the land has been raised to at least 10 or 12 meters from original ground level. “The filling is going to choke the nallah or rivulet in the adjoining area and if that happens there will be flooding in the surrounding areas.”
“There is a complaint filed with the MPDA and we will now write to the Mining department and also the District Collector and Police to investigate and book the accused involved in filling of this land,” Naik said.
MLA Saldanha expressed shock over the rampant filling disregarding the risks of natural calamities. “I am shocked that there is no complaint regarding this filling till date, hence I will file complaint with MPDA and make sure that the culprit is taken to task,” she said.
“We need to hurry up with the investigation and need to restore the land back to its original position as it risks other areas during any natural calamity occurrence,” she said.
Sarpanch Girish Pillai too has assured action saying, “We will take the help of police in making sure that the culprit is identified, booked and made to restore the land back to its original form.”
