MARGAO: Angry over the outbreak of dengue in their locality, Cutbona locals have urged the government to intervene and not allow any migrant labourers to put up in the locality.
They have also demanded that the Fisheries Department and Velim Panchayat should not allow any more trawlers to operate from the Cutbona jetty on grounds that outside boat owners keep their migrant labourers close to their locality.
Says Andrew Cardozo: “Dengue is fast spreading at Cutbona. The water barrels, where the health officials detected larvae do not belong to the locals, but the migrant labourers. We have now taken a final stand that there should be no more migrants staying in our neighbourhood. We are not against boat owners from outside or the migrant workers. They are free to earn a livelihood, but they have to also see the interest of locals. Today, our locals are affected by dengue. From where would our people get the money to meet the high cost of hospitalisation?”
Andrew pointed out that there are only five boat owners from Cutbona operating from the jetty, but boat owners from other places have kept their labourers in two plots in the locality.
“We have appealed to the government not to allow any more trawlers to operate from Cutbona. We hope the government listens to our plea and save us from dengue”, he pleaded.
