PONDA: In a shocking incident reported on Valentines’ Day at Gosaviwada, Usgao, suspected to be one-sided love affair, 22-year-old Mayuri Mahadev Vaigankar from Tiral, Usgao was left battling for her life after being attacked with a bottle and a knife by ‘jilted lover’ – 25-year-old Manthan Gaude from Palwada-Usgao, on Wednesday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at 7 am when Mayuri was walking to her workplace at Mushroom Factory, Usgao, which is located a km away from her house.
As usual, she took her regular shortcut – an isolated narrow pathway and after walking some distance, the accused suddenly stopped her and got furious for not responding to his love request. With an intention to kill the victim, Manthan strangulated Mayuri and later attacked her with a glass bottle and a knife. Police said that Mayuri sustained serious head injuries but somehow managed to reach the main road. The locals, who noticed the victim bleeding, immediately shifted her to Piliem-Dharbandora Primary Health Centre. However, she was later shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital at Bambolim. Mayuri later fell unconscious and is now battling for her life in GMC.
The accused immediately fled from the spot but was later arrested by the police below the Usgao Bridge
It is learnt that one-and-a-half-month ago, the victim had filed a complaint at the Usgao Police Outpost against Manthan for torturing her.
Acting on her complaint, the police had called both the families and after warning Manthan, the issue was settled. However, Manthan continued to harass Mayuri and on Wednesday, he attacked the victim. The victim’s mother later filed a complaint against the accused.
Ponda Police registered an offence against the accused as under Section 307 of IPC.
