MARGAO: In a major fire at Varca , a godown of decorations and other goods was gutted on Sunday afternoon. The loss in the fire is yet to be estimated; however, according to the owner one Tannyson Rosa of Calvaddo, Varca the loss is estimated to be around Rs 50 lakhs.
The incident was reported in the afternoon. Though the exact cause behind the fire is yet to be established, a short circuit is suspected to be the cause, informed Fire and Emergency Services, Margao.
Narrating the incident, sources at the Margao fire station informed that they received a call at around 12.30 in the afternoon that the store of Tennyson Decorates was engulfed in fire.
Immediately the fire tender rushed to the site. On reaching the site, it was observed that the fire was intense and had spread almost to the entire store. Chairs, besides tables, thermocol, cloth, and other goods were gutted.
Backup fire tenders were called from Margao, Ponda, Verna and Sanvordem. A total of six fire tenders were used to extinguish the fire, which took several hours.
Local MLA Churchill Alemao also visited the site of the incident and assured to help the owner of the store.
