VASCO: Accusing the Vasco civic body for not taking up pre-monsoons works effectively under its jurisdiction, angry residents from ward number 11 and 12 of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC), along with the Councillor Saifullah Khan, confronted Chief Officer Deepali Naik as well as Chairperson Deepak Naik on Monday.
About 30 aggrieved residents, including women and elderly persons, marched to the office of Deepali and submitted a memorandum on the pending pre-monsoon works in ward number 11. The angry residents later demanded explanation from her as to why MMC had failed to de-silt gutters and major nullahs in their wards due to which they had to face flood-like situation during the continuous three-day rain.
Some even complained that due to poor quality of pre-monsoon works the gutters and the storm water drains in their area got blocked and water entered into many houses. “Since the rains started we are having sleepless nights as the water is entering into our houses. If the MMC had de-silted the gutters and nullahs on time this situation would have not occurred,” said a local resident.
The Chief Officer Deepali Naik made all efforts to pacify the agitated residents by explaining that MMC had undertaken pre-monsoon works by sending labourers to all 25 wards. She also informed them that even the Water Resource Department had undertaken de-silting of major nullahs and said the pre-monsoon works are going on in a phased manner.
The residents retaliated and accused the MMC CO for neglecting ward number 11, because the councilor representing them is from the opposition camp. They claimed that other wards have received more attention and only the wards of the opposition have been neglected.
“This shows that MMC’s administration has totally collapsed and thus MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik should resign from his post as he failed to take up pre-monsoon works effectively,” Councillor Saifullah demanded.
