Velim P’yat seeks police protection to complete HC-mandated MRF shed

MARGAO: The Velim village panchayat has written to the South Goa Superintendent of Police  (SP) asking for assistance in providing police protection for the construction of its Material Recovery Facility (MRF) shed, which it has to complete soon, as per the recent directions of the High Court (HC).

Pointing out that the matter is of urgent nature, the Panchayat secretary explained that the MRF shed is being constructed in survey 253/1 of Velim village, adjacent to the illage panchayat office and this activity is of paramount importance for waste management and environmental preservation in the locality.

“However, we are facing significant obstruction and resistance in carrying out the construction process, due to which the construction activity has been suspended,” said the Secretary.

It was further pointed out that this has not only delayed the completion of the project but has also hampered the panchayat’s efforts to adhere to HC directives.

The Secretary said they have requested the assistance of police personnel at the site to ensure the smooth construction of the facility, safety of the workers, maintain law and order, facilitate uninterrupted work and act to act as a deterrent to any attempts to unlawfully obstruct the construction.

Referring to the HC directions and the directions from the Director General of Police (DGP) in this matter, the panchayat asked for four lady constables and two male constables to be deputed, along with the assistance of the concerned Police Sub-Inspector (PSI).

“We believe that with the cooperation and support from the police, we

can carry out the construction in a peaceful and efficient manner.

Your assistance will contribute significantly to waste management and environmental conservation in our village,” the Secretary added in the letter.
