At a meeting held today, the villagers raised apprehensions on the proposed fish meal plant proposed at the Cutbona fishing jetty
Velim Sarpanch Reny Caeiro said she along with the panchas are with the villagers in this cause to save the village from unplanned land acquisition.
She pointed out that the authorities had turned a blind eye to the fears raised by the villagers to the proposed plant, saying the land acquisition process is still in progress.
“Both the collector, land acquisition officer and the Director of Fisheries have failed to address the apprehensions put forth by the people of Velim”, she added.
Velim Civic and Consumer Forum convenor Ramona Almeida stated that NH-4A and NH-17 Land Acquisition has been stalled for need of Environment Impact Assessment Report (EIA). “In Velim, the Fisheries Department along with the Collector’s office is acquiring the land at Cutbona without any project report or EIA”, she said, and appealed to the people to wake up and prevent the village form being turned into “Goa’s only rotten fish dump”.
She informed that as per the Directorate of Fisheries letter dated 22/03/2010 where the department informed that it had acquired 19,401 sq. mts. in Cutbona area of which only 9,901 sq mts stands utilized. It was also pointed out that similar land was acquired on the opposite side (Mobor) and at Colva which is not being utilized. Almeida told the people that once the land is acquired by the government it cannot be given back to the owners. After prolonged discussion on the land acquisition process, the gathering of the villagers celebrated the 64th Independence Day as a Black Day.
