VASCO: Several fish vendors from the Vasco market on Monday marched into the Mormugao Municipal Council demanding to stop sale of fish in wholesale markets and roadsides.
Fish vendors led by Custodio D’Souza complained that due to sale of fish in wholesale market and roadsides, they were receiving less business.
They threatened to start selling fish in front of the municipal building from Tuesday, if the municipal authorities fail to initiate action and stop wholesalers and roadside vendors.
D’Souza said that all the vendors had closed the fish market, marched to the Mormugao municipal building and met the chairperson Leo Rodrigues.
He demanded to know why the municipality and the police were not stopping illegal sale of fish by wholesalers and roadside vendors.
D’Souza declared that fish vendors will continue coming to the municipality everyday till the time municipality stops illegal sale of fish.
He recalled that the municipal authorities had assured them that they will stop illegal all sale of fish when they took over the market from them for reconstruction.
According to D’Souza, the municipality stopped illegal sale of fish for only five days after which illegal sale of fish started again.
Mormugao chairperson Leo Rodrigues told the protestors that the municipality had already stopped sale of wholesale fish and roadside vendors and assured them that if anybody found selling fish roadside, he/she will be stopped immediately.
