Vidhyanagar residents irked over public works signage board

VASCO: The Vidhyanagar locals on Saturday were caught up with surprise after noticing a huge signage board installation “Work is in Progress” on the national highway near MES College junction.

Some residents from Vidhyanagar Colony were irked as to why the public works are being carried out on the weekends when the public offices are closed.

They also questioned as to what is the need to erect a huge signboard near the MES College junction.

Residents after noticing this questioned the contractor about the permissions to carry out the work and why works are being carried out on Saturday and Sunday when government offices are closed.

Speaking to Herald, Edward Fernandes, former president of Vidhyanagar Colony said that I noticed on Saturday that two huge signage are being installed and I had no idea who and why these things were installed near MES College junction.

“Last year, two huge signboards at Verna and Airport had collapsed and if this signage collapsed again on the busy highway then it could be fatal for the students, people who commute through this road. Further it could lead to paralysing of traffic on the highway. I don’t find these places are ideal for placing huge signboards. Further there is no idea why the public works is undertaken on weekends when the govt offices are closed,” Fernandes added.

Ganesh Lamani, another resident said that I do not have any problem if the signage board is installed but my only prayer would be that all safety measures should be taken during installation of the signage.

He said that this highway road caters to the thousands of normal traffic as well as to the students studying in the college nearby. Last year, one huge signage board collapsed near airport, such incident should not happen and nobody should get injured, such precautions need to be taken by the people who install it.
