AROSSIM: As the Christmas season unfolds, bringing with it the usual flood of conventional decorations, a young artist from Arossim is on a mission to revive the fading tradition of pottery in Goa. Simonie Rego, a recent fine arts graduate, has not only embraced pottery but is also determined to attract the younger generation to this traditional art form.
Following her graduation, Simonie delved into painting and pottery, attending short-term classes in wall painting and pottery at Verna.
Under the guidance of her instructor, Mr. Valentino Gaspar, she not only learned the techniques but also helped revive a fading studio. Immersed in the world of pottery, Simonie continued her studies for almost a year, honing her skills and realizing her passion for clay art.
Recognizing her talent, Simonie’s father supported her in establishing a studio at their home, providing her with the space to create and showcase her unique clay items.
Despite her youth, Simonie is fully committed to the art of pottery, creating designer and cutwork articles entirely by hand, without the use of molds. Her creations are made from terracotta, and she ensures a regular supply of clay to sustain her ongoing work.
Simonie acknowledges the declining presence of actual clay items in daily life due to the prevalence of plastic but is determined to keep the tradition alive. She emphasises the importance of maintaining and promoting this heritage, offering unique clay Christmas decorations to add a touch of tradition to the festive season.
