ALDONA: Nestled in the quiet interiors of Panarim, in Aldona, Sapna Phadte, a homemaker, has transformed her passion for crocheting into a successful business.
After getting married, Sapna found herself with the responsibility of taking care of her family and had no opportunity to work elsewhere. However, her passion for crocheting persisted, and she decided to turn it into a hobby that would not only bring her joy but also a steady source of income. Sapna’s love for creating art with wool and thread goes back to her school days in Vasco, where she would experiment with broomsticks to weave intricate patterns. “I’ve always had a love for creating art with wool and thread, and after I got married and became a housewife, I realized that this could be a way for me to contribute to my family’s income,” she says.
At first, many people doubted the viability of this hobby as a source of income, but Sapna persevered and would use all her spare time to create beautiful pieces, and before long, her skill and artistry gained popularity, both locally and on social media.
Sapna’s crocheted creations are a sight to behold, with vibrant colours and intricate patterns that showcase her skill and attention to detail. From delicate doilies that can be used to adorn a table or shelf, to beautiful table linen that make any meal feel like a special occasion, Sapna’s work is a testament to the beauty and value of handmade crafts.
“When I first started, I didn’t have any real direction or plan – I just knew that I wanted to create beautiful things,” Sapna recalls. “But over time, I’ve honed my skills and developed my own style. Now, I’m able to create all kinds of different pieces, from traditional designs to more
modern and unique patterns.”
Sapna’s determination and hard work paid off as she began receiving orders from various exhibitions across the state. Her products are made with such high-quality materials and intricate details that they lasted for more than 15 years, garnering loyal customers and admirers.
Sapna’s husband played a significant role in supporting her passion, even encouraging her to travel and attend exhibitions. Her son has even taken an interest in her work and has asked her to teach him, making the art a family affair.
Crocheting may seem like a slow sale product, but Sapna believes that perseverance, quality, and patience are essential in this craft. She advises others who share her passion to never give up and to have faith in their abilities. Sapna encourages them to create and showcase their work, knowing that sales will eventually come.
