Father’s ingenious robot makes life better for special-needs daughter

PONDA: Bipin Kadam, a resident of Ponda, goes the extra mile to provide a comfortable life for his specially-abled daughter. In a remarkable feat, he has created a robot named ‘Maa Robot’ that can feed his daughter, Prajakta. Originally from Kudal, Maharashtra, Kadam recently relocated to Ponda with his family after residing in a rented room in Dattagad, Bethora, for 24 years.

Since her birth, Prajakta has required special care, and Bipin’s wife, Prerna, had to be at home to feed her. This inspired Bipin, who had only studied till the 10th standard, to tap into his inner scientist. Working at a private factory in the Bethora industrial estate, Kadam successfully developed the ‘Maa Robot’ in 2020, at a cost of approximately Rs 15,000. The robot feeds his daughter only upon hearing the commands ‘Rice, Daal, and Vegetables’, an achievement that has boosted Kadam’s confidence.

Kadam’s dream now is to create similar robots that can help children with special needs worldwide. Unfortunately, he has faced challenges in receiving the necessary support and financial assistance. Meanwhile, Kadam’s son is currently pursuing his studies in the 11th standard.

Recognising Kadam’s efforts, the Goa State Innovation Council Prototyping Lab has supported him in reaching his goals. The ‘Maa Robot’ operates automatically with the push of a single button and has gained recognition from American and international TV channels. However, the Indian government has yet to take notice of Kadam’s groundbreaking invention.

Former Mumbai High Court judge C Chavan personally met Bipin Kadam to inspect his creation, while renowned Dr Nirmal Surya invited Kadam to a workshop in Mumbai in April 2023. The workshop was attended by expert doctors from around the world, where Kadam provided detailed explanations about his robot.

Furthermore, Kadam was felicitated by Goa Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai last year for his innovation. Despite his achievements, Kadam faces financial constraints preventing him from patenting his ‘Maa Robot’. He appeals to anyone willing to support him in this noble cause to come forward and assist him.
