Flower power: Restaurateur-turned-orchid enthusiast Shane Lobo on his blooming second innings

ASSAGAO: In the vibrant and culturally rich land of Goa, some senior citizens are embracing a ‘second innings’ in their career, often quite different from their first. Among these personalities is 63-year-old Shane Lobo, based in Assagao, who transitioned from managing the renowned Portuguese-era Casa Bela restaurant in Mapusa to overseeing a thriving orchid cultivation venture.

Born and raised in Mapusa, Shane Lobo recalls his school days, where he was known for his passion for sports and, at times, his youthful mischievousness. In a bold act of defiance, Shane left St Britto School after the principal, Fr Catao, insisted that he get a haircut. “I left and took with me the school’s best sportsman as well, and we continued our education in a different school,” he says with a sly smile. Growing up, the Lobo name was synonymous with the famous Casa Bela restaurant, making the family local celebrities in Mapusa. “My father took on the lease to run the restaurant for five years, but we ended up running it for 25 years,” he recalls.

Casa Bela quickly became a sought-after destination, as it was one of the few quality restaurants during those times. Visitors, including people from across Bardez, flocked to Casa Bela to relax and unwind. Shane fondly remembers contributing to various aspects of the restaurant’s operations, from managing customers to cooking and organising gigs and small events.

Little did Shane know that his life would take a different turn after the Casa Bela era. He recalls a significant moment that sparked his passion for orchids. While in Bangalore for personal business, his mother requested an orchid plant from there, which he bought for her. “Around 25 years ago, that plant cost me Rs 300.I believe it sowed the love for orchids in my heart right then, though I was unaware at the time,” says Shane.

Tragically, his mother passed away a few months later, and on that very day, the orchid plant bloomed with vibrant flowers. Touched by the timing and significance of the moment, Shane’s cousin, who attended the funeral, requested the orchid plant, which he willingly parted with, believing that was the end of his journey with orchids.

Life took its course, and after Casa Bela was closed, Shane continued working in the hospitality industry and relocated to Assagao, seeking a peaceful and tranquil life for his family. He was offered a flat in Amandeep Orchid, a complex with ‘Orchid’ in its name. This coincidence inspired Shane to explore orchid cultivation in his newfound home.

From that moment, Shane’s love for orchids grew stronger, and he embarked on a mission to cultivate and grow these delicate plants. Over nearly a decade in Assagao, he has nurtured more than 100 varieties of orchids in his limited space, a source of immense pride for him.

Life has not always been smooth for Shane. He experienced difficulties due to excessive drinking, leading him to undergo rehabilitation. However, his passion for orchids has brought him satisfaction, and his thriving project keeps him content and occupied, while his orchid garden is a place of beauty and serenity.

He emphasises the benefits of growing orchids in Goa’s climate, as they are hardy and thrive in the region. Orchid flowers, unlike others, remain fresh for an extended period, making them an attractive choice for decorators.

Shane has not started selling his orchids until now but has only been spending money to buy more and more plants, to ffulfil his dream of having a big orchid farm.

Shane recognises a divine hand in his journey and believes that his work offers rewards

in both personal and professional aspects.

While Casa Bela has become a part of history, Shane believes it was a blessing in disguise, given the current traffic and population challenges in Mapusa. He views the ups and downs in his life as valuable lessons and a

full-circle journey that has ultimately brought him fulfilment and satisfaction.
