QUEPEM: A remarkable example of dedication and passion in the field of agriculture, Chandras Krishna Phal Desai, a senior citizen from Kusman in Quepem, has been cultivating green dreams for over four decades. In 1977, he took his first formal step into the realm of agriculture, and his self-confidence and determination have propelled him on this inspiring journey.
Far from slowing down at his age, Chandras Phal Desai remains a youthful figure with an unquenchable passion for farming. Over the past 47 years, he has transformed his 16,000 square-metre property in Kusman into a lush horticultural haven. His impressive venture employs around 100 workers and features a variety of trees, including coconut and betel nut trees, breadfruit (nir fanas), nutmeg, and much more.
Chandras holds a BSc in Agriculture and has an impressive background in the field. He dedicated 30 years to the Goa State Bank and an additional 20 years as an Agriculture Officer.
On his private property, which also encompasses his historic Portuguese-era residence, he diligently tends to his land, cultivating it for agriculture and horticulture. This endeavour yields an annual income of approximately Rs ten lakh.
Reflecting on his journey, Chandras Krishna Phal Desai shared, “I’ve always had a keen interest in contributing to the agriculture sector. While I formally entered agriculture in 1977, my connection with the field dates back further.” His experience as an agriculture officer allowed him to provide guidance and support to numerous farmers over the years. He expressed gratitude for the continuous support received from the Quepem Agriculture Department, which has enabled him to pursue his farming.
The orchard on his property flourishes with over 2,000 betel trees, 450 coconut trees, breadfruit trees, 100 nutmeg trees, and a plant nursery. Subsidies provided by the Agriculture Department have
supported the maintenance of fruit
trees and nurseries on his property, including two water pumps and a betel nut
drying machine.
Furthermore, an essential aspect of Chandras selfless dedication to agriculture is the fact that he possesses a large tract of land in the heart of the Quepem municipal area – a prime location suitable for real estate development. Yet, he has chosen to cultivate this land instead of concretising it. His commitment to preserving nature amid urbanisation sets a unique example for urban dwellers who often witness nature’s decline in the name of development.
For nearly 50 years, Chandras and his family have contributed wholeheartedly to agriculture. More than 100 workers depend on his farm for their livelihoods, making him a vital source of sustenance for the local community.
