Sowing seeds of change: Fr Michael Pereira guides Goan youth back to agriculture

Margao: Agriculture, deeply rooted in Goa’s heritage, has faced a decline in recent times as modern generations drift away from traditional practices. However, amidst this shift, an inspiring movement led by Fr Michael Pereira of SVD Seminary, Raia, is rekindling the essence of farming amongst the youth of Goa.

Traditionally, agriculture played a pivotal role in the lives of Goans, sustaining communities and shaping their way of life. Yet, as the allure of alternative pursuits grows, fewer young individuals opt for the fields. Fr Michael Pereira, along with his dedicated Chotanagpur Youth, aims to reverse this trend by reacquainting young people with the joy and significance of agricultural pursuits.

Leasing a paddy field from a local resident in Verna, Fr Michael Pereira embarked on a transformative journey with his band of young helpers. Amid his priestly responsibilities and seminary duties, he has devoted his time to guide and inspire the young generation to reconnect with the soil, embracing the art of cultivating their own sustenance.

Soniya, one of the spirited youth participating in this venture said, “Working in the fields during the rainy season is truly invigorating. This experience provides me and my friends with a unique opportunity to grow our own food, which is a source of immense pride.” Amita, another enthusiastic participant, echoed this sentiment, “The joy of fieldwork is unmatched,” she quipped. Amita also noted the ripple effect of their efforts, recounting how her mother joined the cause, bridging generational gaps and fostering a sense of unity.

In an era dominated by mobile devices, social media, and fast-paced lifestyles, the sight of these young minds wholeheartedly immersed is heartening.

The initiative spearheaded by Fr Pereira not only cultivates crops but also cultivates a sense of purpose, community, and environmental consciousness.
