PONDA: In today’s modern landscape, a prevalent trend among highly qualified youths is their inclination towards government jobs over embracing their family businesses. Despite soaring inflation rates, many opt for white-collar positions instead of steering their businesses.
However, Sunil Suresh Gaonkar, 39, hailing from Ganjem-Usgao, stands as a notable exception, proudly upholding his father’s legacy through Hotel Gaanjeshwari. For the past 65 years, this establishment has been woven into the fabric of Bhamani-Paliem, dating back to the pre-Liberation era.
The hotel was established by four visionary brothers – Atmaram, Suresh, Ramesh, and Mahesh Gaonkar from Ganjem. While the three others ventured into different domains, Suresh Gaonkar assumed the mantle of Hotel Gaanjeshwari’s sole custodian, a responsibility that his son Sunil has continued for the past 22 years. Amid the rapid currents of globalization, Goans have steadfastly clung to their culinary heritage, indulging in hearty meals and savoury snacks. Hotel Gaanjeshwari’s success lies in its authenticity, offering homemade delights like pao-bhaji, onion pakoras, samosas, batatwada, tea, and other cherished Goan staples.
Beyond the proprietor’s unwavering dedication, the hotel’s success can be attributed to the commitment of staffers Dhana Naik and Dnyani alias Dnyaneshwar Naik, who have tirelessly served patrons for over 35 years. Their warm hospitality and delectable offerings foster an environment that beckons repeat visits. Despite its unassuming façade, the hotel has even attracted esteemed guests, including Goa’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, who specifically frequents the establishment for its famed pao-bhaji.
Reflecting on challenges, Gaonkar acknowledged a setback caused by the mining ban. However, the hotel’s longstanding reputation enabled a swift recovery, solidifying its place in the community.
