MARGAO: Following large-scale complaints of faulty weighing scales, the Margao Wholesale Fish Market Association has warned customers to check the weight before making fish purchases from the wholesale fish market.
A warning board put up at the entrance to the wholesale fish market has cautioned customers of faulty weighing scales and malpractices by some of the fish sellers, with a request to customers not to pay any amount if the weight is found less.
Reminding customers that retail sale of fish is not permitted in a wholesale fish market, the Association has said the wholesale fish market will only sell fish above five kilograms henceforth.
However, it is not clarified how the customers are supposed to check the weight if they have doubt manipulation of the scales. Neither the wholesale fish market association nor the government agency has made any provision for verifying the scales.
A wholesale fish merchant, M Ibrahim, however, said that he would ask the Association to make arrangements for a scale in its office to clear doubts of the customers.
Legal metrology officials had in the past conducted raids in the wholesale fish market following complaints of faulty scales. A number of faulty scales were also seized in the operation. However, there’s no periodic checking of the scales by the Legal Metrology officials.
