PANJIM: Incessant rains lashed Goa on Tuesday as the south-west monsoon currents became active over the State. Water-logging and traffic chaos resulted in disruption of normal life.
Beginning Monday night, the State received heavy to very heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall on Wednesday, and has asked fishermen not to venture into the sea during next 24 hours owing to rough conditions.
The widespread monsoon rains led to flooding of arterial roads and national highways affecting vehicular movement. The pothole ridden roads further worsened the situation with traffic moving at a snail’s pace during the peak hour.
The heavy rains took a break later in the afternoon as their intensity reduced, according to the weather office.
The onset of the south-west monsoon over the Goa coast was on June 8. After an initial surplus in the first 45 days of the season, the monsoon has been below normal for the last one month. The season total till date is 89 inches, with a 15 percent deficit. On an average scale, till August 28, the rainfall for Goa is around 104 inches.
