Can they teach?

The CM will now personally monitor the progress report of the teachers after he had expressed his apprehensions over the quality of education

PANJIM: In a major initiative towards improving quality of education in the state, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who also holds education portfolio, will be personally monitoring the ‘progress report’ of the teachers. The Education department has decided to consider the views of the Chief Minister before recommending salary hike or promotion to the teachers.
Parrikar during the recently held Assembly Session had expressed his apprehensions over the quality of education in the state and had felt the need to teach the teachers. He had also warned the teachers against frequently taking to the streets to press for their demands. Acting upon the Chief Minister’s directions, the Education department will now consider the ability of teacher to teach the students before considering promotions or other benefits to them.
The Director of Education Gajanan Bhat said the teachers needed to show improvement in their ability to teach. “We are formulating the process to monitor and examine the capability of teacher,” he said. The department has decided that only the eligible teachers would be able to get the future benefits. “It is our duty to see the progress of teachers also to ensure we provide quality education to our students. This will make teachers also more accountable,” he said.
Citing an example, Bhat said a few teachers do not implement the curriculum with proper zeal with regards to traffic discipline, hygiene and Solid Waste Management. “The seven-member special team comprising of me, Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Chairman and other officials would be visiting every taluka from August 30 onwards,” he said adding that the meetings of the teachers would be organised emphasizing them on the need to teach this curriculum.
Government last week issued advertisement for the post of 182 primary teachers (Marathi medium) for which teachers eligibility test certificate, issued by the government of Goa is been made mandatory.
