Heavy rains on Saturday morning forced authorities at the Anjunem dam to open two gates and release water to maintain the water level at the dam.
Assistant Engineer M P Huddedgaddi told Herald that the two gates were opened at about 11 am and water was released at the rate of 10 cubic metres every second.
It may be recalled that heavy rains had caused the water to rise to 90.2 metres. Though the danger level of the dam is 93.2 metres, it was necessary to maintain the water level to below 90 metres.
“The flowing capacity of the river at present is up to 200 cubic meters and as such, if the water was released at the rate of 10 cubic metres a second, it will not affect the flowing capacity of the river and as such, there is no danger. However, all four gates will be opened only if the water level rises up to 93.2 metres, which is the full capacity of the dam,” Huddedgaddi added.
Meanwhile, two houses collapsed at Taliwada-Kudchirem and Bordem-Bicholim, causing a combined loss of about Rs 1 lakh.
