Weather patterns affect crop productivity badly; Prices rise

Unseasonal rain and changes in weather patterns cause a rise in vegetable prices

PANJIM:  Frequent alteration in weather patterns including that unseasonal rain has badly affected the annual crop productivity, Noor Mohammed, a vegetable vendor of Panjim municipal market, informed on Thursday. 

While the tomatoes which used to cost Rs 30 per kg have increased to 100 per kg, the cost of cauliflower has skyrocketed to double from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 50 per kg this month. 

The price of brinjal and carrot has been stabilized to Rs 60 per kg from last month. The cost of onion and potato per kg has not shown a major rise. Potato is now costing Rs 40 per kg and onion Rs 30 per kg. 

A bunch of coriander now cost Rs 40 per bunch which is double the rate compared to last month while a bunch of fenugreek leaves which was costing Rs 10 per kg now costs Rs 40 per bunch. 

Another vegetable vendor Nadeem informed that the cost of a lemon per piece has now been reduced to Rs 6 from Rs 8. However, spring onion is now sold at Rs 15/bunch from the previous Rs 10/bunch. 

“While cabbage per piece cost Rs 40, cost of capsicum, cluster bean, and chilli have shown no change in the past one month and are stabilized to Rs 80 per kg. French bean per kg costs Rs 120,” he added.
