There are now more than 628 million gamers in India and the industry’s market value is expected to grow to $1.1 billion by 2021. As such, gaming in India is looking more exciting and prosperous than ever before. This has attracted the attention of some investors and developers who want to capitalise on this momentum, further accelerating the industry’s growth. With so much happening right now, we thought we’d take the time to analyse what is causing this exponential growth. Keep reading if you’d like to find out what the future is currently looking like for gaming in India.
Young Market
One of the main contributing factors to the growth of the gaming industry in India is the fact that the country has a youthful population. Over 75% of people living there are under the age of 45. As gaming does seem to appeal more to young people, this could be why the industry has become so popular in India. What’s more, young people are more likely to play online games using their mobile phones. Both these factors mean we will probably see the online gaming industry grow in India – especially when it comes to mobile gaming.
Internet Users
Interestingly, India has the second-largest number of internet users in the world, coming just after China. With an audience of 560 million people going online to be entertained, it makes sense that game developers are jumping at the opportunity to create games for Indian internet users. For example, virtual arcades have exploded onto the scene, such as Comeon Casino India. Websites with compilations of minigames have also been popular.
Localised Content
The globalised society that we live in today is incredibly Eurocentric. The majority of mainstream games have been made with American and British audiences in mind, as opposed to Indian players. However, now the gaming industry in India is growing so rapidly, it looks like more localised content will be made. This means that video games will be much more immersive and tailored – the characters will actually look like the gamers roleplaying as them.
Esports & Fantasy Sports
As we’ve mentioned several times throughout this article, online gaming is a massive deal in India, thanks to the huge amount of internet users. Following on from this, more Indian gamers are becoming interested in esports and fantasy sports. For those who aren’t aware, esports are online games which people play competitively. Meanwhile, fantasy sports are where gamers assemble a team of real players, then send their dream team out to compete against other people’s fantasy teams. The outcomes of these games are then determined by statistical probability. Esports and fantasy sports have become hugely popular in India, especially regarding cricket (no surprises there). With 264 million gamers who play internet sports, the prize money for these activities looks like it will continue to grow.
The gaming industry in India is only getting bigger and stronger. Beyond our predictions, we are excited to see what else the future will bring for gaming.
