Forest officials on Saturday seized 37 kilos of wild boar meat at Pilgao, Bicholim, from two persons hailing from the same locality. They have been placed under arrest.
According to reports, Animal Rescue Squad chief Amrut Singh was alerted that gun shots were heard in the Pilgao forest at 2 am. Singh and his team rushed to the site, but could not find the perpetrators.
Later at about 8.30 am, Singh was tipped yet again that someone was seen transporting wild boar in a rickshaw. Singh swung into action and searched the entire area. Suspicious over the movement of some persons in the forest, he followed them and found that about five persons were busy chopping the wild boar into pieces. Three of them fled from the site, even as he managed to click photographs of all. Singh then alerted the forest officials, who arrived at the site and arrested two persons, Rohidas Salelkar (40) of Newwada-Pilgao and Eknath Shinde (32) of Gaonkarwada-Pilgao. The forest department also seized 37 kgs of meat from the site.
