PANJIM: The Vedanta Ltd on Tuesday said that the matter pertaining to the farmers of Amona is presently sub-judice and it will abide by directions of the Court.
“Vedanta is committed to responsible and sustainable business practices and environmental conservation is our top priority. We deem it necessary to be transparent and forthcoming in the way we conduct our operations. The company works diligently to mitigate any adverse environmental impacts and adherence to environmental best practices. We fully comply with local regulations and only after obtaining requisite permissions from the relevant authorities, we conduct any business. The matter pertaining to farmers of Amona is presently sub-judice and we shall abide by the directions of the Court,” a statement from the company said.
The statement from the firm was issued in the wake of Congress Party demanding that the government should intervene in the matter of compensation to be given to farmers by the pig-iron plant of Vedanta Ltd at Amona.
“Farmers taking crop in the area had complained about how plant is responsible for spoiling the environment and damaging their crops. The High Court had directed the company to compensate the farmers, but till today they have not received a single rupee,” Srinivas Khalap, general secretary of Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, had said on Monday.
Khalap had claimed that farmers had not received compensation towards pollution allegedly done by the pig-iron plant of Vedanta Ltd at Amona.
