PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Wednesday that the government will consider establishing women’s police stations in Mapusa and Margao.
Through a calling attention motion tabled in the State Legislative Assembly, Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai brought to the notice of the House that crimes against women – including cyber crimes – are on the rise.
They demanded that the government set up women police stations in every taluka to deal with crimes against women and provide them speedy justice, while protecting their identity and dignity.
Sardesai pointed out that for eight lakh women in the State, the government has just one women’s police station, which is located in Panjim.
Replying to the MLAs, Sawant , who also holds the charge of the Home Department said, “Presently, we can’t fulfil the demand of having a women’s police station in every taluka. However, we will consider having full-fledged women’s police stations in Mapusa and Margao.”
