PANJIM: Following the registration of FIRs against its president and members, Save Calangute on Friday stated that they would not be cowed down by such tricks of the government and would not mind going to jail if it is for betterment of the village.
Claiming its members had no hand in the ransacking of a restaurant on Wednesday night, Save Calangute said that it was the entire constituency of Calangute which had gathered against the illegalities and not just its members.
“We will not be intimidated by the FIRs and complaints against us or our members. We will continue to act against the illegalities that are happening in the village,” says a statement issued by the President of Save Calangute, Kundan Kerkar.
Based on a complaint filed by a waiter Sandeep of Cricketer Bar & Restaurant, the Calangute Police registered an FIR against Kundan Kerkar and 10 others under Sec 143, 323, 427 and 149 of IPC.
Kerkar accused the authorities of turning a blind eye despite knowing the illegalities in the village. “Every time we the people have to point out the illegalities and despite this the authorities failed to act,” he said.
Further, he stated, “we had approached the authorities a month ago regarding the opening of the Cricketers restaurant but they failed to act. Had the authorities acted earlier, there would have been no need for the people to take the law into their own hands.”
Nonetheless, he says, he and the members of Save Calangute are not scared to go to jail if it is for the betterment of Calangute.
