PANJIM: In view of the suspension of a nurse from the cardiac department at Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), for allegedly reprimanding a patient’s family and failing to arrange clean linen, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told the nursing association in Goa that such attitude and inefficiency at work by nurses would not be tolerated.
“I have put it across to the Nursing Association that such things won’t be tolerated. It is a warning, and the disciplinary action against the cardiac department nurse, is a message to all to carry out their duty efficiently,” the minister said, responding to a media question on the suspension of nurse Yogita Naik.
The minister said that action followed when a heart stroke patient was denied clean linen and his family was later reprimanded by Naik for having approached the higher ups. “There was a heart stroke person shifted to the department. The family is traumatised and if they demand for clean bed sheets, it should not be an issue. When I received a WhatsApp message, I asked the Medical Superintendent to ensure the patient is provided clean bed sheets and it was immediately done,” Rane said, recalling what occurred for him to take action against the nurse.
“The nurse then reprimanded them for approaching the higher ups. She is given the responsibility to change the mackintosh and linen of 10 beds and she did not ensure it was done. As such, action was taken,” he said adding that GMC has outsourced laundry facility and it has enough stock.
