With GSUDA stepping in, Margao’s parking project to finally see light of day

MARGAO: The much-delayed pay parking project in Margao finally takes off with Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) inviting tenders to carry out soil testing of the land where the construction will take place.

After this is completed, GSUDA will issue fresh tenders for the project

Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Manuel Barretto said that GSUDA will be handling all the procedures for the project whose initial estimated cost was approximately Rs 5.5 crore. The revised estimates are pegged at Rs 6.5 crore.

It may be recalled that MMC had to return the Rs 3 crore it had received from the State government in 2011-12 as part of Goa’s liberation Golden Jubilee package, to undertake a signature project in its jurisdiction. MMC was also asked to pay back the interest accrued on it , as it failed to utilise the sum for the desired purpose.  The total amount was said to be around Rs 5.5 crore.

MMC had earlier floated tenders for the project multiple times, but it had failed to get bids from prospective contractors. The hike in prices due to the imposition of GST, was cited as the main reason for the failure of the MMc tenders.
