MARGAO: After the Colmorod residents sought assistance from the Electricity Department staff to trim the trees posing danger to the public, it has been revealed that the post of tree-cutter in the Margao Municipality lapsed several years ago forcing the civic body to outsource the work.
MMC Chief Officer Rohit Kadam said the tree-cutter’s post is vacant for the past several years and as a result the civic body is compelled to outsource the work. On Tuesday, Colmorod residents were forced to seek electricity department staff’s assistance in trimming branches of a tree posing danger along the 4 lane Margao-Navelim road.
Speaking to media persons former councillor Savio Coutinho said a rain tree was posing danger to those commuting along the main road at Colmorod.
He said when approached, the MMC staff claimed that they do not have the cutting blade/saw to undertake the trimming work, while a sanitary inspector suggested the Chief Officer that a private party had such cutter, as such he could be requested to provide the same.
“My first thought was that when there are so many government agencies, why should anyone be made dependent on a one single person? As such I approached the Electricity Department Assistant Engineer Carlos Fernandes, as there was a likelihood of some electricity cables getting damaged in case the tree uproots”, he said.
Further, he said Carlos promptly obliged and provided his staff and the much needed cutter-blade and completed the tree trimming work.
