PANJIM: The Goa Mine Workers Union (GMWU), representing over 400 employees, has petitioned Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar demanding the immediate resumption of iron ore activities at a Cuddegal mine in Sanguem, which is under suspension despite obtaining necessary clearances.
“Due to the lifting of the Supreme Court stay, favorable decision of the Ministry of Environment and Forests in regards to environment clearance and improvement in the market for iron ore, positive circumstances have been created for the regulated resumption of mining operations in the State,” GMWU general secretary Naresh Shigaonkar said in the representation.
“The Cuddegal mine is amongst the finest in Goa. This mine has been scientifically conducted and managed. There are ample reserves of good quality ore. Due to the cessation of operation, the families of the workers as well as many more who are indirectly dependent on this mine are deprived of means of livelihood,” he said.
