Workman’s death leads to mob frenzy at Verna

VERNA: A workman’s death in a net-making unit in Verna ‎almost turned into a law and order situation on Saturday with hundreds of locals coming out to the streets in anger.

Allegations of police trying to allegedly hush up the case after the workman was killed saw an angry mob of people coming out to protest against the police. Amidst tension, as the mob refused to disperse and sought answers from the police, there was an imminent threat that a jittery police force would resort to a lathi charge.
Even as the police were conducting the panchnama on the death the locals refused to leave the area where the factory was located. However, later in the  night people were persuaded to disperse after reinforcements arrived from neighbouring stations and assurances were given that ‎the case would be properly investigated.
Most people were, however, not convinced and speaking to the media said they were sure that the police would try and hush up the matter, an allegation denied by the police.
