Yoga will help overcome drug addiction: Guv

PANJIM: Days after crores of Indians participated in the International Yoga Day celebrations across the country; Goa Governor Mridula Sinha said that yoga will help a drug abuser to overcome the addiction.  
Addressing a gathering to observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on Friday, she warned that consumption of narcotics affect health resulting in illnesses, which can be expensive to cure. 
“To be a strong and intelligent, one does not have to get addicted to drugs. Youth should switch over to healthy activities such as yoga for a healthy life free from drugs,” she said.
Meanwhile, schools across Goa have been encouraging yoga with two classes being held per week since last year. Sources said that in many schools, English has been reduced from eight classes per week to six, in order to accommodate yoga. This is in addition to mass physical training and sports classes in the weekly time table in the schools.
While lauding the role of Goa police in creating awareness against drug trafficking and drug abuse, she further said that communities should also contribute towards the cause with families, schools and civil society helping their children and youth to get rid of drugs.
“Narcotics will in no way meet and solve the problems of life and therefore one should live a healthy life away from drugs,” she commented terming the menace an evil in society.
IGP Sunil Garg said that the department is conducting several programs and camps creating awareness on the issue. Earlier a 
rally of school students was taken from Kala Academy to the Institute Menezes
 Braganza hall where it was culminated with the function.
