ZACL union protests VDA reduction

VASCO: Agitated members of the workers’ union of Zuari Agro Chemicals limited (ZACL) held a flash protest on Monday in front of ZACL’s main gate. Among other things, they wanted a roll back of the reduction of Variable Dearness Allowance.

According to the workers, for the last six years, the ZACL management has failed to settle most pending demands and without increasing workers’ salary, the management has started further exploitation of workers by reducing 70 per cent of the VDA  which is illegal and has been arbitrarily done without taking the workers’ consent.
“The ZACL management has decided to slash the VDA to more than half and it has decided to do so without proper consultation with the union members. This is not acceptable to us,” alleged Union leader Raju Mangueshkar.
He further alleged that, “The ZACL management played dirty politics by taking the other workers’ union (which has only 60 members) into confidence with the belief that the major union would also accept the same. However, we have decided not to accept such a settlement and have approached the labour commissioner. We have informed him about the reduction in VDA which is illegal. Hopefully, the order of Labour commissioner would come in our favour  and ZACL will have to accept our demand to roll back reduction of VDA, among other things” he added.
