Zuari workers threaten protest over VDA reduction

VASCO: Workers of Zuari Industries Limited, under the banner of Goa Kranti Sena Mazdoor Union and All India Trade Union Congress,

have warned the Zuari management to roll back the reduction of Variable Dearness Allowance or face protest. The warning was issued during a public meeting held at Birla Zuarinagar.
“There is atmosphere of strike prevailing at ZIL as for the last six years the ZIL management failed to increase the worker’s salary but has gone head with exploitation of workers by reducing 70 percent of the VDA allowance which is illegal and has been arbitrarily done without taking workers into confidence. As per the service agreement, the ZIL management has mentioned that the VDA of each worker would be Rs 3.50, however without giving any second thought of its ill effect on workers the management has slashed VDA to Rs 1.25,” union leader Christopher Fonseca said.
AITUC leader, Adv Suhas Naik said, “We have already approached the Labour Commissioner with the complaint of reduction of VDA which is illegal as per law and we would not allow this to happen and if require we would hold mass protest by taking support of all workers union from Goa.”
