Herald: With the backing of three Independent MLAs, including two former Congressmen, do you feel that Goa Forward can be a major spoilsport for Congress?
Khalap: See, it is a fact that the BJP has lost the public mandate and hence has no right to come to power again. The only side for BJP is Congress, which has the largest section of people representing the party. But Congress cannot take the chance of going alone, especially considering the formation of this new regional front. All three Independent MLAs are former congressmen and are strong enough. Congress cannot take the chance
Herald: So, you mean, Congress should go for a grand alliance with these independent legislators through Goa Forward?
Khalap: Congress can very well explore the possibility of having a grand alliance with them. This is not the time to make it a prestige issue. Congress has failed, both at organizational level and the legislative level. So, both together can prove a viable alternative for the BJP.
Herald: But the party high command has already made it clear that it would like to go alone for upcoming assembly polls. For AICC the new party is just another seasonal party.
Khalap: In politics, one cannot go alone and it is a clear fact. Whether it is a seasonal party or a national party, all need to join hands to weed out the BJP from power. Congress alone cannot do this. I know Goa Forward is a new party and in days to come it will have to prove its stand in democracy. But that does not rule out having any alliance or understanding between Congress and them.
Herald: Will the Congress’ move to go alone lead to a split of voters between them, Goa Forward and NCP?
Khakap: I would not like to comment on that at this stage. Congress still has time to tighten up its base and appeal to voters. They will have to assess the performance of their MLAs and block committees.
