Divar Islanders settled in England for the first time came together in brotherhood to celebrate the feast of Our Lord Redeemer and to observe the 92nd Death Anniversary of Padr Agnelo, at St Anselm Church, Southhall, London, recently.
Over 600 devotees (Divadkars) attended the mass. Pilar Fathers, Fr Francisco Colaco was the main celebrant along with Fr Patrick D’Souza. The “Salve (Angels)” was also incorporated and executed beautifully giving a divine touch.
“For the first time, Divarkars have come together in a far of land, to celebrate the feast of Our Lord Redeemer. Divar is not only known for the Bonderam festival but also for the miraculous image of Our Lord Redeemer, which has a long history of healing powers and favours granted. We Divarkars in a year come together twice in harmony to celebrate — the Harvest festival and for devotion and favours of Our Lord Redeemer,” informed Roy Azavedo, who is one of the catalysts to keep the Islanders united in the United Kingdom.
After the mass around 150 women and men from the island village of Divar gathered at Hambrough School Hall, Southall, London to celebrate the auspicious Lord Redeemer’s feast with dine and dance.
The event commenced with the cutting of the cake by the committee members. Vice President Pio Do Rego gave a welcome speech where he mentioned how the planning, execution and brainstorming of the whole new concept came together of celebrating the feast for the first time in England.
Beatrice Pinto and Cris Da Costa, the MCs of the night ensured the crowd were well looked after in every aspect till the very end especially with their funny one liners and impromptu crowd pulling capabilities.
The band, which consisted of all home grown singers and musicians of Divar, were undoubtedly the highlight of the event. Their foot tapping music was equally reciprocated by the crowd who had their dancing shoes on that night. Vocalists Megan, Dessrie Fernandes, Fatima Fernandes, Tony Gomes and Cassius Gomes catered to the youth with their energetic tracks and melodious voices.
Variety of party games were played, spot prizes distributed and the raffle draw held. The scrumptious and lip smacking buffet spread which comprised authentic Goan delicacies was prepared by Jacques Caterers.
