Dr Emanuel Gracias took over his father Dr Carmo Gracias’ hospital in the year 2014 and since then, he has moved his way up to bringing about many changes in his profession of Gynaecology and Obstetrics besides modernizing his own hospital to offer amenities to patients that they never experienced before.
Emanuel is known for counseling and making mothers understand the importance of normal deliveries without opting for the caesarean option.
“Lots of C-sections now a days are done because the women itself are too posh to push. I want to reduce that and bring back the focus on normal deliveries. We at Gracias Maternity Hospital are proud to have an extremely high normal delivery rate and we perform the C-section only when medically indicated,” asserts Dr Gracias.
Having studied Minimal Access Surgery and in vitro fertilization from Paris and Germany, Dr Emanuel introduced 3D scanning and many more facilities at the hospital. For his experience in Belgaum, the doctor is well known to treat cases of post pregnancy bleeding.
“I have extensive experience is managing cases of post-partum hemorrhage. I deal with over 2 to 3 cases per day at our hospital in KLE Belgaum. In Goa, of course it’s extremely rare as most cases are managed effectively from the beginning but my main interest lies in laparoscopy surgery. Patients walking home in two days after a laparoscopic hysterectomy as compared to the usual 5 days it takes in open surgery is what I focus on. And hence the thrust on minimal access surgery, for keeping the damage minimal,” explains Emanuel.
And now keeping in mind expats and most NRI Goans, Emanuel has launched a new initiative called Gracias Connect.
“I deeply understand the needs of the husband who is so far away and hence we’re developing Goa’s first virtual OPD and telemedicine unit namely ‘GRACIAS CONNECT’ to help the husband ‘never miss a moment’,” asserted an excited Dr Emanuel as he balances our morning meeting with his daily team briefing. All these ideas and progress are on his mind while he travels once a week to lend his expertise at Canacona, besides managing Gracias Maternity Hospital at Margao. The Gracias Clinic at Canacona, in the words of Emanuel is nothing but providing better healthcare to pregnant mothers in the rural areas while he plans to open many more such clinics across Goa’s talukas.
To streamline his hospital, Dr Emanuel has also created an online system accessible to patients through a smartcard to book an appointment online and also a Facebook forum to advice and interact with people interested with women healthcare.
On the fertility section, Emanuel made huge progress in getting Goa’s one of a kind machine. The sperm is passed through the new magnetic machine and through a magnetic field.
