VIRABHAT-CURTORIM: Agxem beat Bhatti 1-0 to emerge champions of 5th Jose and Franky Memorial inter-ward football tournament organised by SC Virabhat-Curtorim, at St Alex church ground, Curtorim, on Sunday.
Right from the start, Agxem showed their attacking intent and troubled the rival defence with well orchestrated raids but theirs forwards misfired from close range on several occasions.
Agxem got the first chance in the sixth minute to score but Joel Martins’ shot was well saved by the Bhatti keeper. Agxem took the lead in the 20th minute through Manuel Castanha with a glancing header after a fine cross from Joel Martin to make it 1-0 in first half.
In the second half, Bhatti could have equalised but James Fernandes’ power loaded shot was well saved by Agxem keeper Ignatius Gomes. Bhatti tried their best but the Agxem defence stood tall till the final whistle.
Alexio Reginaldo Lourenco (MLA Curtorim) was the chief guest and gave away the prizes along in the presence of Regino Fernandes, Savio Fernandes and other dignitaries.
SC Virabhat also felicitated two lady sportspersons Stancy Fernandes (National volleyball player) and Michell Castanha (international football player) for their outstanding performance in sports and bringing laurels for Curtorim in the hands of chief guest.
