PANJIM: International Master Audi Ameya put up a sterling performance in the 1st Online Hersonissos International Chess tournament, organised by the Greece Chess Federation to win the Bronze held recently.
A total of 52 players including 10 titled players from 17 countries participated. Ameya beat IM Krishna CRG (IND), Mammadzada Emin Serraf ( AZE), Boutikos Leftherios (GRE), Bakshim Mancia (GRE), Sokolosky Yahli (ISR), and drew with WIM Nguyen Thanh Thuy Tien (VIE) and Leftheriotis Alexadros (GRE).

Ameya had 5 wins and 3 draws to tally 6.5 out of possible 9 rounds, and finished fourth to qualify for the 9 rounds Blitz knock out game which would decide the final winner.
In his first round, Ameya defeated his Indian compatriot IM Krishna CRG in the Armageddon after a 1-1 score in blitz. He made it to the semi-finals where after a tie in the 1-1 blitz he drew the Armageddon as white thus the second player Aarav Dengla made it to the final.
Ameya won the match for bronze with a 2-0 score against Italian Giovanni Marchesich.
“I am very thankful to God that I could achieve the coveted International Master’s Title just before COVID19 pandemic which has jeopardised all activities and with restrictions on travel, many chess players and enthusiasts are left with disappointment. However, unlike other sports, chess is gaining momentum because of several online tournaments being organised,” said Ameya.
