PANJIM: Dark horses Anjuna Gymkhana trounced Calangute Association 3-0 to move into the final of the 11th London Trophy organised by Goa Velha Sports Club and played at Goa Velha sports club ground, on Saturday.
In a fast paced encounter, Aniket Mandrekar of Calangute Association saw his fierce effort being punched out by the Anjuna Gymkhana keeper Soma Korgaonkar.
Charles D’Souza of Calangute Association was unlucky as his chip was brilliantly kept out for a corner by the rival keeper.
At the other end, Rohan Kamble of Anjuna Gymkhana put Nitesh Salgaocar through who ran down the right flank and centered into the Calangute Association box but Samuel D’Souza’s shot was too weak to beat the Calangute Association keeper Selwyn D’Souza.
Calangute Association having an upper hand in the tournament tried to get a goal past the underdogs Anjuna Gymkhana however the Anjuna defended well and tried to make their way past the Calangute defense.
Both the teams were however locked goal less at the break.
After the break, Pawan Dhargalkar of Anjuna Gymkhana took the Calangute Association defence in his stride and laid back the ball for Rohan Kamble whose feeble effort was saved by the Calangute keeper.
Anjuna didn’t give up but continued their raids in the Calangute defence making it difficult for the rivals to contain them.
Nitesh Salgaocar opened the scoring for Anjuna Gymkhana when he headed home capitalising on a defensive lapse by the Calangute rearguard.
Calangute Association stung by the goal went all out for the equaliser but Blake Haldankar saw his effort saved by Soma Korgaonkar from point blank. Soon after, Blake Haldankar’s lobo missed the target by a whisker.
Anjuna Gymkhana consolidated the lead through Rohan Kamble whose deep lob beat the Calangute keeper. Nitesh Salgaocar scored his brace and the final nail in the Calangute’s coffin after he dribbled past a couple of defenders and shot home.
