MAPUSA: Calangute Association SC registered a hard fought 1-0 win over Cortalim Villagers SWS Club in the GFA Goa Professional League, at Duler stadium, here on Tuesday. Calangute’s skipper Pratesh Shirodkar scored from the penalty spot.
After today’s victory Calangute Association has six points. while Cortalim Villagers are yet to open their account. Calangute Association coach Anthony D’Souza made three changes, while Cortalim Villagers coach Jude Barreto made four changes in their starting XI.

Both the teams played on equal footing in the first session of play. In the 7th minute Cortalim Villagers should have taken the lead but Selwyn Miranda’s weak shot from close was cleared by Calangute’s defender. At the other end Cortalim goalkeeper Mackvino Colaco left his charge to tackle Calangute’s Vinayak Rane outside the penalty box receiving a caution and a direct free kick which saw Pratesh Shirodkar strike sail just past the crossbar.
Five minutes later Calangute’s Joywin Carneiro got the better of rival defender Clive Miranda but saw his shot zoom over the horizontal bar. As the match progressed Cortalim’s Velroy Carvalho’s open header off a free-kick by Selwyn Miranda went out. Cortalim were indeed unlucky not to score when Denil Rebello placement brushed past Calangute’s custodian Presley Mascarenhas gloves for a corner.
In the added time Calangute almost found the mark but Cortalim’s custodian Mackvino brought a brilliant save as he blocked Jovito Fernandes’ strike. On crossing ends, Cortalim almost broke the deadlock but Calangute’s goalkeeper Presley Mascarenhas brought a full stretched diving block and the ball travelled to Ronil Azavedo whose header was cleared on the goal line by Joywin Carneiro and this time Clive Miranda strike kissed the upright.
A 25-yard strike by Calangute’s Joywin Carneiro was blocked by Cortalim custodian Mackvino. The next thirty minutes were mostly restricted to the midfield, where finally in the 87th minute a cross by Calangute’s Dalwin Coelho saw Cortalim’s defender Joliston Rebello handling the ball, prompting referee Valenton Fernandes to point to the penalty spot. Pratesh Shirodkar stepped forward and scored, making the score 1-0. Cortalim Villagers skipper Clive Miranda received the Man of the Match award from Babli Mandrekar.
