CALANGUTE : Crowd favourite Calangute Association upset the applecart of hosts Nerul Sports Club 9-8 via the tie-breaker and book a place in finals of all-Goa inter-village Nerul Soccer 2013 at Nerul ground. The match was tied 1-1.
Nerul began the match on promising note attacking the Calangute citadel time and again and forged ahead in the 12th minute through Amit Naik. Down by a goal, Calangute exerted pressure on Nerul defense but their forwards failed to find the net.
Changing over, both the teams dished out good brand of soccer but forwards were found wanting in front of the goal. With time running out and when it looked like its all over for Calangute, Elber Gonsalves came up with the equaliser in the dying minutes of play much to the delight of Calangute fans.
The winners were decided on penalties.
Calangute kept nerves to romp home winners by 9-8. Domnic Fernandes, Rajkumar Naik, Preston Fernandes, Agnelo Fernandes, Sarvanand Korgaonkar, Blake Haldankar, Colin Siero, Marshal Fernandes and Deep Govekar converted for Calangute while Stanley D’silva, Sainath Kalangutkar, Sidharth Shirodker, Sarvesh Dabholkar, Felix Barretto, Xavier Estrocio, Amit Naik and Jennifer Clemente were on target for Nerul.
