PANJIM: Campal Footballers, comprising of players aged above 50, got the better of Senior Citizens FC 3-1 in a friendly encounter at the Panchayat ground, Porvorim, on Wednesday.
Fr Caetano Fernandes scored a brace for the winners, while Ahmed Hussain added his name to the score sheet. Former Sesa Goa stalwart Salvador Fernandes (Salu) pulled a goal back for Seniors (players aged above 60) and kept them in the hunt till the end.
The players train three times a week at Miramar and Campal.
The match was played on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. Twenty-four hours earlier Senior Citizens had given a good account of themselves while playing a friendly amongst themselves on Senior Citizens Day at the same venue.
79-year-old Subhash Netravalkar, the oldest player on the field, was adjudged as the man-of-the-match for his 19 saves throughout the contest.
Campal Footballers’ 50+ came up with a more polished display with players like Paulo, Succour, Brazilio Vaz, Suresh, Kishore Kamat, Norman, Francis and Ahmed in control of the proceedings. Senior Citizens tried to put up a fight with Bosco Monteiro in midfield, and Anthony Barreto, Allen D’Sa and Stanislaus D’Souza manning the defence, but eventually found the opposition too strong.
Carl Sousa, Porvorim SC President was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Senior Citizens secretary Hilary Fernandes welcomed while president Nicholas Queterio proposed the vote of thanks.
