PANJIM: Government College, Quepem demolished Mallikarjun College, Canacona 8-0 to advance into the semi-finals of inter-college women football championship 2013-14 organized by Goa University, at University ground, Taleigao Plateau, Thursday.
In a one-sided quarter-final, Government College, Quepem proved to be an excellent lot doing the maximum damage to the rivals through Salma Fernandes (2), Nagpushpa Angadi (3) and Urmila Gaonkar, Macrenna Dias, Arina Fernandes (one each).
Rosary College, Navelim overcame Dempo College, Altinho by a solitary goal in another match.
Abigail Alvares scored the all-important match winner early in the first half, before the Dempo girls could settle down.
In the concluding quarter-final, Don Bosco, Panjim got past St Xavier’s, College, Mapusa 1-0.
This was a much anticipated match as the teams had some promising footballers. The match winner was scored by the star striker Mareela Xavier in the 14th minute. She dribbled past three opponents and beautifully curled the ball in the top left corner to stamp her class on the match.
In the last quarter of the match Xavier’s pressed hard for the equalizer, but was deprived by the defensive strategy adopted by the Bosco girls.
Now in the semi-finals to be played on September 21, Carmel College, Nuvem will face Govt College, Quepem at 9.15 a.m. while Rosary College, Navelim and Don Bosco, Panjim clash to book the final berth at 10.30 a.m.
