MARGAO: A second half strike by striker Vinak Korgaonkar helped Chapora Yuva Sangh pip Nerul Sports Club 1-0 to lift the North Goa Yaari Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Saligao United in a pulsating final at Duler Stadium, Mapusa on Saturday.
Chapora Yuva Sngh dominated the proceedings and enjoyed the better ball possesion. They got the first major chance in the 10thminute to break the deadlock when Maruthi Harijan and Samuel combined well but the latter failed to beat the rival goalkeeper in a one-to-one situation.
Chapora Yuva Sngh squandered the easiest chance in the first half in the 15tn minute when Rohan Kambli outwitted a couple of defenders and his attempt sailed over the crossbar from hand shaking distance much to the dismay of Chapora supporters.
At the other hand, Nerul Sports Club took time to settle down and once they struck the rhythm they called the shots against the rival goal and came close in surging head in the 25th minute when Paul received the ball from his own half and his stiff shot was well saved by the rival goalkeeper Sona Korgaonkar.
In the second half, both the teams showed the urgency and played attacking football and Chapora Yuva Singh scored the match-winner in the midway in the second half when Vinak Korgaonkar unleashed a volley which crashed into the net.
Stung by that setback, Nerul Sports Club went all out in search of equaliser but just didn’t pack enough punch to find that equaliser.
Chapora Yuva Sangh were meticulous in their approach but their forwards wasted from close range to increase their tally.
RDA Minsiter Jayesh Salgaonkar was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of guest of honour Sushil Sharma, State Head Goa, Diageo India and special invitees Welvin Menezes, Secretary GFA, Lavino Rebello, vice-president of GFA and other dignitaries.
