MAPUSA: Churchill Brothers registered a thumping 5-0 win over Panjim Footballers in the GFA’s Professional League, at Duler stadium, here, on Sunday.
Red Machine led 1-0 at the breather with Mauvin Borges and Willis Deon Plaza getting two goals each while Clencio Pinto also got his name on the scoresheet.
Churchill Bros were in a marauding mood from the kick-off and Panjim Footballers felt the complete brunt of it as they were outplayed in the entire match.
In the 20th minute, U-20 Preston Fernandes’ well connected shot from a cross by Jovel Martins ricocheted off the crossbar and went out with the Panjim keeper stranded to his spot.
Churchill scored the opening goal in the 31st minute through Mauvin Borges who provided finishing touches to a delicious cross delivered by the hard working Jovel Martins to give his side the lead.
Panjim keeper Preston Rego brought up a timely save in the added time as he made himself big to deny Preston Fernandes in a one-to-one situation from a pass by Kalif Al Hassan.
Changing ends, Clencio Pinto should have doubled the lead for Red Machine in the 52nd minute but failed in getting the better of keeper Preston from close range after being put through by Willis Plaza.
Panjim had the first decent attempt in the 60th minute of levelling terms when Chandan Gawas’ header from a corner-kick taken by Mahesh Kumar missed the target by a whisker.
Wills Plaza scored a cracking goal in the 65th minute to put Churchill 2-0 up from an inch perfect cross delivered into the danger box by Vanlal Duatsanga.
It was one-way traffic once the second goal went as Churchill upped the level to net in three more goals in the final ten minutes of play.
In the 82nd minute, Red Machine were awarded a penalty after Clencio who was through to goal was brought down by Janio Fernandes, referee Deepraj Sangelkar had no hesitation pointing to the dreaded spot, Clencio who took the responsibility calmly tucked the ball into the net to make it 3-0.
Willis Plaza got his second goal in the 89th minute with a neat header once again Jovel Martins providing the cross to make it 4-0.
Mauvin Borges completed the rout and also got his brace in the added time with a well timed header from a long ball delivered by Kalif Al Hassan to make it 5-0.
