MARGAO: Host Cuncolim Union edge past CRC, Chinchinim 2-1 to advance into the quarter-finals of South Goa Mcdowell’s No. 1 Yarri Premier Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Cuncolim Union, at Government School play ground, Cuncolim, on Saturday.
Cuncolim Union started the match in a whirl wind fashion and dominated the first 20 minutes of the game.
Cuncolim Union surged ahead in the very 3rd minute of the game when defender Treven Dias took a free kick of which the ball slipped through the hands of the rival goalkeeper JosleyRebello and rolled into the path of striker Myron Fernandes who without wasting any time punted the ball into the goal.
Cuncolim Union doubled the lead in the 14th minute when Myron Fernandes picked up the through ball from DipakVelip and the former beat the rival goalkeeper Josley Miranda with snap shot.
Liston Rebello received the ball from his half but Cuncolim Union goalkeeper Jerrico Dias came to his sides rescue when he blocked the formers shot.
Later, Liston’s cracker was saved by Cuncolim Union goalkeeper Jerico.
In the 26th minute Chinchinim’s Liston Rebello’s shot was handle by Cuncolim Union defender Treven Dias inside the penalty box and referee awarded the spot kick. The resultant spot kick taken by Liston Rebello wherein he sent the Cuncolim Union goalkeeper in the wrong way to narrow down the margin.
Change of ends saw CRC, Chinchinim put up an improved show as they showed urgency and their forwards swarmed into the rival territory and launched barrage of attacks however Cuncolim Union defender Krishna Shirodkar and Treven Dias were stubborn at the back and protected their slender lead.
After a brief lull, Cuncolim Union went into attacking mode and created openings as Myron Fernandes nearly scored his hat trick but Chinchinim goalkeeper Josely Rebello denied him sure goal.
Myron Fernandes of Cuncolim Union was adjudged man of the match.
