MARGAO: Cuncolim Union prevailed over Parish Youth, Nuvem 4-3 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of South Goa in the Mc Dowell’s No. 1 Yaari Premier Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Enfermos Sports Club, Sinquetim, at Rosary ground, Navelim, on Sunday. There was no score at full time.
Parish Youth held the upper hand in both the session and enjoyed better ball possession. Parish Youth must blame themselves for the defeat as they created many openings but their forwards failed to beat the rival goalkeeper Adeny Fernandes.
At the other end, Cuncolim Union were subdued lot as they failed to function as a cohesive unit.
Post resumption, Parish Youth continued to enjoy the better share of exchanges but Remy Colaco’s effort hit the crossbar, much to the dismay of the Nuvem supporters. They nearly broke the deadlock but Albino Pereira’s feeble shot went straight into the safe hands of rival goalkeeper Adney.
With the match running out, the teams went all out but rival defenders stood tall in protecting the citadel intact.
In the penalty shoot-out, Adney Fernandes, Beston Colaco, Krishna Shirodkar and Jermio Fernandes were on target for Cuncolim Union while John Dias, Jerose Oliveira and Remmy Colaco converted for Parish Youth.
Cuncolim Union were richer by Rs 50,000 and a glittering trophy while Parish Youth had to settle for Rs 30,000 and the runner-up trophy.
The following individual prizes were awarded to First goal scorer of the final Adney Fernandes of Cuncolim Union, Best goalkeeper Adney Fernandes of Cuncolim Union and Best player of the final Inacio Colaco of Parish Youth, Nuvem.
Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado was the chief guest. K Gopinath, Deputy General Manager United Sprits Limited gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Jose Roque Gonsalves, parish priest of Rosary church, Navelim; Navelim Sarpanch Frank Fernandes; Mahendra Shirbhate, Area Sales Manager, United Spirits Ltd and Joe Dias, Event Manager, VJTS Arts, Chinchinim. In all, 16 teams participated.
