Curtorim Gymkhana claimed the top position in the Salcete Zone GFA’s Second Division league thrashing Santa Cruz Society of Poitamado, Cuncolim 8-0 in the concluding match, at Cuncolim ground, on Monday.
Curtorim Gymkhana led 5-0 at the breather.
Striker Melvin Fernandes, Tony Dias, Agnelo Colaco, Roy Albuquerque and Welbon Fernandes were the scorers.
Curtorim Gymkhana outplayed their opponents in all department of the game and virtually toyed with the rival weak defence.
At the other end, Santa Cruz Society were ultra defensive in the beginning and attempted to frustrate Melvin Fernandes and Tony Dias by reinforcing the back line.
Curtorim fired home early in the 3rd minute when striker Melvin Fernandes tapped it in from a cross from Agnelo Colaco from the right. Midfielder Mariano Rebello was fulcrum for Curtorim waistline as he kept his forwards busy with stream of passes.
Agnelo Colaco doubled the lead in the 12th minute of a Roy Albuquerque pass. Earlier Roy feeble try went to the rival goalkeeper from close range via Mariano Rebello flag kick. Later, Melwin made it 3-0 from a pass from Agnelo Colaco.
Welbon Fernandes try hit the cross bar and then it was the turn of Roy Albuquerque to inflate their tally. Tony Dias put the issue beyond doubt and made it 5-0 in the 35th minute.
The second half did not bring any respite for Santa Cruz as Tony Dias was a thorn in the rival defence netting two more goals immediately.
Welbon Fernandes rubbed the salt on the opponents’ wounds as he drove the last nail into the coffins.
Curtorim Goalkeeper Johnson Bhagat had a field day as was hardly tested by the rival strikers.
With this win, Curtorim Gymkhana collected 10 points from four matches to top the group and qualify for the play-offs. Santa Cruz Society of Poitamado have been relegated to Third Division.
Wilred Leisure Sports Club also qualified for the play-offs from Salcete Zone.
Curtorim Gymkhana coach Alex Dias praised the boys for their excellent showing throughout the tournament and for remaining undefeated.
“It was superb teamwork. Kudos to my boys who toiled so hard to bring glory to the village and hope they will continue same zeal in the play-off,” Dias added.
At Curtorim ground, Fr Agnel Youth Club, Paroda came from behind to defeat Maina Sports Club 3-1. Alexander Fernandes put Maina Sports Club into the lead in the 25th minute. But their joy was short-lived when John Carvalho canceled the lead in the 37th minute. Later, Anthony Dias made it 2-1 while Timotio Lima rounded off the tally in the 84th minute.
